Biography

Brenda Whiteway is a visual artist specializing in painting who lives and works in Charlottetown. She received a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Nova Scotia. For Brenda, art-making is a way to find pattern amid chaos. Her art enables her to communicate ideas and convey a sense of the world around her. From conception of an idea, through the struggle of creating something from that idea, art-making is a process that provides her with sense and purpose. Her current work explores the passage of time—particularly as it relates to rural life, past and present—and the effects of urbanization and technology on traditional ways of life. She has exhibited her work in numerous group shows both on and off Prince Edward Island, and has had a solo exhibition, Emerging Visions. Her work is in private collections in Canada and the United States, and in public collections including Transport Canada, the Art Bank of the Canada Council, the PEI Art Bank, the permanent collection of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum, and the City of Charlottetown. Brenda has been a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, a Kline Foundation Grant, a Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts Grant, along with being the winner of the 1991 Canada Games Logo Competition and receiving the People’s Choice Award three times during the Great Garden of the Gulf Juried Exhibitions. Commissions she has completed include a mural-size painting for the Canadian Coast Guard in Charlottetown, a series of botanical paintings as part of a 48-foot mural located at the Gateway Village Permanent Exhibition Site, in Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island, a 2001 50-Cent Sterling Silver Coin for the Royal Canadian Mint, and seven portraits of former Charlottetown Mayors for the City of Charlottetown.
