Biography

Lorraine (Gosbee) Vatcher. I grew up in Prnce Edward Island. After marrying Walter, we settled in Newfoundland for thirty years and raised our two children in that beautiful province. My husband got a transfer in 2003 and now this former PEIslander wakes up to the awe of the Northumberland Strait every day. I draw great inspiration from its continuous changing quality.

I don’t remember a time when I was not creating something. At a very early age I used my mother’s and grandmother’s sewing machines. Being the oldest of a large family made the prices of fashionable clothing quite prohibitive, however, since necessity is the mother of invention, I soon learned to design and sew many of the latest fashions. I still do and my mother’s quilts keep us all warm on cold winter nights.  Along with sewing, I nurtured many of the crafts, knitting, embroidery, photography, etc

When painting I use my own photographs and when working on a canvas, I am recalling the sights, smells and the sounds that were surrounding me at that time. Although the pictures form the basis of the subject, my mind remembers and is able to give the paint a life. My father painted and now all his children have his works gracing our walls. We are very lucky that we are able to see the memories he created. It seemed a natural progrssion to use a paint brush.

Still-lifes, scenery portrait, oil, watercolour and acrylic(my favourite) are all in my portfolio. Most times I have two paintings on the go. Today’s favourite may not be the same as tomorrow. I will flip-flop continually so that I may retain the freshness of creating something new, just like the changes in beautiful ocean that greats me every morning in Little Sands.
