An artist of Queens County.

Biography

A professional visual artist on PEI for the past 48 years. I have had over 100 exhibitions in many provinces. My awards: Fr. Adrien Arsenault Senior Arts Award, The Lister Memorial (given by the PEI Crafts Council), Life Member PEI Crafts Council, Centennial Painting & Sculpture awards in 1967 & 1973. Elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1978, Royal Society of Arts medal 1981, the 125 Commemorative Medal presented by the Government of Canada 1992, received the Order of Canada in 2001 and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal 2002..

My work is in many private and public collections, City of Moncton, Avon of Canada, Dofasco, Hamilton, Stentor Management, Ottawa, Senate of Canada, Ottawa,UPEI, Holland College, UNB,Canadian Coast Guard College, Sydney, Royal Canadian Mint,Ottawa,McInnis Cooper, Charlottetown, St. Mary's University, Halifax, and others. I have illustrated books (many by the poet/artist Adrien Arsenault). I have been a Board Member of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, one of the Founding members of the PEI Council of the Arts, President of the PEI Crafts Council, Life member of Theatre PEI and am a Sessional Lecturer UPEI (Studio Arts 111). Designed $350.Gold Coin for the Canada Mint 1999  recently completed portraits of 8 Mayors for the City of Charlottetown. I have major sculptural works at the University of PEI, Confederation Center of the Arts and Park on Spring St. I designed stained glass windows St. Dunstan's Basilica, Trinity United Church, Charlottetown, Roman Catholic Church in Stratford and the church in Hunter River.

I like to work in various media. In the past I've worked in welded steel, clay, wood carving, acrylic paint, silkscreen printing, drawings, gouache, casein and many more.  I paint subjects now that involve strong light and design.  Painting mainly on stretched canvases now and not as large as I used to. 

Education & Training

Graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art (1954-1958)
Started the graphic art department at CFCY TV in 1958.
Graduate of the Instructors Training program the NB Technical Institute 1963-64)
Started Commercial Art program at the Provincial Vocational Institute Charlottetown( 1964-1969)and the Graphic Design program at Holland College in 1969. Started the Holland College School of Visual Arts in 1977.
