Biography

Margaret McEachern is an Island designer, knitter and weaver.  Her designs celebrate Canadian culture, the colours of our landscape and the Maritime heritage of both land and sea.

Margaret says, “I learned a great deal from my grandmother who enjoyed teaching the art of fine handwork, including knitting and tatting.  My mom always had balls of wool, skeins of embroidery floss, needles and bits of material to keep us occupied.  She showed me by example that the quality of items you made yourself could be far better than anything made in a factory.”

Her summer studio is located at Avonlea Village in Cavendish where, in addition to giving knitting and weaving demos, she plays the roles of Marilla Cuthbert and Rachel Lynde and is Avonlea’s stage manager.  She also co-ordinates the artisans and activities for Avonlea's Artisan Studio.  From October through May, she works in her home-based studio in Charlottetown, PEI.  Margaret's merino wool knitwear and tartans are carried in shops across the Island and New England, and is regularly featured at the Canadian Pavilion in "a major international theme park in Florida".

Margaret serves on the Board of Directors as the representative for the Craft Sector of the PEI Cultural Human Resources Sector Council.  She is also an active member of ACT (A Community Theatre).
