An artist of Queens County. BiographyJim’s musical roots reach back to his early days in County Westmeath, Ireland and the midlands of England. In both locales Irish working families would gather regularly for ceili dancing, songs and stories. These traditional sounds would shape Jim’s musical influences in years to come. In the mid 1970’s Jim’s family immigrated to Ontario, Canada, and again found a thriving Irish community who sang the songs, played the music and danced the dances of the land of Saints and scholars. When Jim took up the guitar as a teenager, he couldn’t help but be drawn to the music he grew up hearing. When he began playing professionally, he quickly found himself working as a sideman and accompanist to many of those seasoned Toronto Irish musicians he grew up listening to. For 15 years and in various duo, trio and group settings, Jim has entertained audiences at ceili’s, weddings, pubs and special events. In 2003 Jim decided it was time to step out of the shadows and make his debut solo recording. The result is a collection of songs and tunes entitled Nowhere To Bide, which the Toronto Irish News described as “carefully selected…a beautiful blend of traditional and folk/roots music.” Jim describes the recordings as a “distilling” of his musical influences, from the early sounds of the Clancy Brothers and Dubliners through the later stylings of Sweeney’s Men and Planxty, and continuing still with the more recent work of Christy Moore, and Sean Tyrrell. Jim currently lives in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and continues to perform in a variety of combinations and settings as well as solo performances. Portfolio
